How to Avoid Cakeface

5 Tips for Smooth Makeup

We’ve all been there – a glance in the mirror that disappointingly reveals cakey makeup – far from the flawless smooth and glowing skin we’re used to seeing on Instagram. The thing is, there are no filters for everyday life. So how can we avoid cakey makeup?

Here are 5 expert tips to help you have the smoothest makeup application - even if you have textured skin.

Tip #1 Skincare!!!!

Its been said time and time again but skin care is truly the key to smooth makeup application. Occasional exfoliation and a daily skin care routine is the key to keeping your skin free of buildup from dead skin cells, old makeup and other contaminants.

Pro Tip: Make sure to choose the correct products for your skin type.

Tip #2 Prep Your Skin

Prep your skin using the right primers. Look for primers that address your specific skin needs to get the most out of your primer.

Pro Tip: If you have mixed skin, use a matte primer on your oily areas and a glow/dewy primer on your dry areas.

BONUS Tip: A good trick for textured skin is to create a smooth base using these four steps:

- Step 1 Cleanse & Moisturize

- Step 2 Lightly dust translucent setting powder on face

- Step 3 Light spritz your face with setting spray

- Step 4 Apply primer

We have tried this hack and it truly helps create the appearance of smoother skin. (Let us know if it works for you in the comments)

Tip #3 Use Clean Tools

There are different ways to apply your foundation. You can use: a damp blending sponge, foundation brush, fingers etc. The most important thing is to make sure your tools are clean to avoid building up old product on your skin.

Pro Tip: Experiment until you find the best tools for you. I personally like to use a foundation brush and will do any additional blending if needed with a damp sponge.

Tip #4 Less Is More

One of the best ways to avoid cakey makeup is to avoid using too much product. The more product you use, the more layers are created enabling the appearance of cakiness and additional texture.

Pro Tip: Use small amounts of product and gradually build up your coverage. You can add more where you need additional coverage. In makeup it's always better to add then to have to remove. Removal of excess product can ruin an entire look and can put you back on first base.

Tip # 5 Setting Spray

Setting spray can help you polish off your look and add more wear time to your makeup.

Pro Tip: Spray as far away from your face as possible to avoid too much spray application in a single area. This will help you have an even application.
